Jacob Maris - Three Windmills [1880]

This painting was etched by Philippe Zilcken sometime before 1890. The subject and composition were a favourite of the artist, who was not seeking to depict particular sites. The main windmill has detail picked out in light browns, but the two further ones are quickly sketched in and appear as silhouettes. The thickly painted sky was done last, and brought round the buildings.

Jacob Maris - A Beach [late 1870s or 1880s]

Maris conveys a powerful sense of isolation in this image of a lone fisherman on a wind-swept beach. The only other signs of human presence are two empty boats pulled out of the water onto the sand. The top two-thirds of the canvas are given over to scudding clouds. Jacob Hendrick Maris was born in The Hague, and was the elder brother of Matthijs and Willem Maris. He studied in The Hague and Antwerp. From 1866 to 1871 he was in Paris; then he settled in The Hague. He died in Carlsbad.

Jacob Maris - A Girl Feeding a Bird in a Cage [c.1867]

This painting was probably painted when the artist was living in Paris. It is similar in style to his Girl Seated Outside a House of the same date, in which the model may be the same girl. This may be the picture that was exhibited at the French Gallery in London in 1868 as The Pet Bird by J.Maris.

Jacob Maris - A Girl Seated Outside a House [1867]

The church seen in the background is in Montigny-sur-Loing. The model for the girl may the same as in the artist's Girl Feeding a Bird in a Cage. This was painted when Maris was living in Paris. It entered the collection under the title Vespers, although the girl appears to be trimming her hat with flowers rather than praying.

Jacob Maris - A Windmill and Houses Beside Water: Stormy Sky [c.1880-90]

Maris excelled at such small, quick evocations of the flat Dutch landscape and the massive, grey cloud formations that scud across the huge expanse of sky. In this painting, only a windmill breaks the line of the horizon. Jacob Hendrick Maris (1837 – 1899) was born in The Hague, and was the elder brother of Matthijs and Willem Maris. He studied in The Hague and Antwerp. From 1866 to 1871 he was in Paris; then he settled in The Hague. He died in Carlsbad.

Jacob Maris - A Young Woman Nursing a Baby [1868]

The woman in this painting is said to be Maris's wife Catharina Hendrika Horn, whom he married in 1867. Their first child was born in April 1868 (and died in March 1869). This work was painted when Maris was living in Paris. The woman's right breast was originally uncovered and was painted over later, probably not by Maris. A pencil study for the picture, squared for transfer, was in the possession of the Maris family in about 1908.
