Ronald Bowen was born in 1944. In August 1966, he went to Europe for the first time and in 1970 settled down in Paris. His long residence abroad has not diminished the American character of his painting: clear, sharp architecture, meticulous craft, and ambitious formats. His style stems from the American Photo-Realist tradition established in the 1960's by Richard Estes and Ralph Goings. Its roots, however, go even further back in American history to the luminous landscapes of the Hudson River School, the dogged realism of Thomas Eakins and the strong architecture and careful craft of 20th century American realists like Charles Sheeler and Edward Hooper.[Oil on canvas, 97 x 130 cm]
